Discover where you can exercise your dog and learn about dog prohibited areas.
The City recognises the need to have public places where dogs can be walked and exercised. For the comfort and safety of all residents it is important to remember that when you are in a public place* dogs must be on-lead except when in an approved dog exercise area.
*A public place includes roads, road reserves, streets, laneways, malls etc.
Dogs are however permitted off leash in the majority of reserves managed by the City, unless otherwise signposted. These areas have been declared by Council as dog exercise areas. In these areas dogs can be walked off leash, provided they are kept under effective control at all times.
Effective control means that the dog:
Is within a short distance from the person in control of the dog at all times
The person in control of the dog is carrying a leash, chain, cord or harness of sufficient strength and no longer than 2m (Measured from the base of the dogs neck)
Responds to commands and comes when called
Does not act in a threatening or aggressive manner to other people or animals
Does not cause damage to flora or fauna
Does not enter a lake or water channel
Does not cause a nuisance to other people
The City has four reserves that have been classified as "fenced dog exercise areas"
