Access information on burning times and how to apply for a fire permit
It is important you exercise extreme vigilance when you are conducting a burn on your property. Burning is prohibited at all times if the Fire Danger Rating is “High” or above for the Fire Weather District in which the fire is to be lit and also when a Total Fire Ban and/or a Harvest and Vehicle Movement Ban has been declared.
Residents can legally burn a garden refuse pile without a fire permit during the restricted burning periods between 1 April and 31 May and between 1 October and 30 November each year as per section 24F(3) of the Bush Fires Act 1954, subject to the following:
The fire can only be lit between 6pm and 11pm and is to be completely extinguished by midnight
At least one person stays with the fire until it is completely extinguished by the application of water or earth
There is no material within five (5) metres of the fire at any time while the fire is burning
The pile must be no more than 1 cubic metre (1m x 1m x 1m)
Only one pile to be burnt at any time
There is a means of extinguishing the fire available at all times such as a garden hose, knapsack spray or fire unit
Neighbours are informed of your intention to burn
You register your burn with the DFES Communication Centre on 9395 9209
The burning restrictions stated in the City of Armadale Environment, Animals and Nuisance Local Laws 2002
are adhered to at all times

Burning is not permitted on properties less than 1,200m2
The smoke must not cause a nuisance to any person
The smoke must not create a traffic hazard
Furnishings, carpets, rubber, plastic, non timber based building materials, petroleum, paint, food waste, manure or straw and other offensive or toxic matter are not to be burned
Garden refuse may be burnt without a permit during the burning unrestricted period between 1 June and 30 September each year. The burning restrictions stated in the City of Armadale Environment, Animals and Nuisance Local Laws 2002 are to be adhered to at all times.

You can apply for a permit to burn from the City's Administration on Monday, Wednesday and Friday between the hours of 3 to 4pm. Alternatively, please complete the application form downloadable below and submit via email, or in person, to the City at least three (3) business days prior to the intended burn period.

Burning permits are required if you are going to burn any trees, bush, or garden refuse during the restricted burning periods from 1 October to 30 November and again from 1 April through to 31 May.
A permit to burn is totally free!
The City only issues a permit to burn for a 14 days period.
The fire must be out by 11pm and fully extinguished by midnight. Please be mindful of your neighbours when conducting your burn in the early morning and late evening.
The Prohibited Burning Period is between the 1st December and the 31st March each year. This means all open fires, including solid fueled BBQs, pizza ovens and chimeneas that are used for the purposes of camping and cooking, however this prohibition does not apply to gas appliances that do not consume solid fuel comprising of a fire, the flame of which is encapsulated by the appliance.
Under the permit condition you are required to contact the Department of Fire and Emergency Services and your neighbours before starting your burn.
Undertaking a planned burn is a significant responsibility and involves a lot of preparation. In the wrong conditions, planned burns can escape and become a bushfire. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has developed Burn SMART resources targeted at small landholders with a property of two hectares or less.
