Piara Waters Library named WA’s Community Facility of the Year

The City of Armadale is proud to announce that Piara Waters Library has been awarded the 2025 Parks and Leisure Australia (PLA) Awards of Excellence - Community Facility of the Year (WA).

The award was presented at the PLA WA Awards ceremony on the 18 June 2025 and recognises the library’s outstanding contribution in creating an inclusive, vibrant and engaging community space.

Mayor Ruth Butterfield said the award is a welcome endorsement of the City’s focus on building connected, future-focused places that reflect the needs of the community.

“This win is particularly special - it’s not every day a library receives a Parks and Leisure Award, but it shows how modern libraries continue to evolve to meet community needs,” Mayor Butterfield said.

“Piara Waters Library is more than just a place to borrow books - it’s a learning hub, a youth space, a creative zone and a welcoming gathering place for one of the fastest growing parts of our city. This award is a testament to what can be achieved when you listen to the community and build something truly inclusive.”

Piara Waters Library opened in September 2024 and is already setting new benchmarks in community use. Designed with the area’s younger and culturally diverse population in mind, the library offers a range of flexible spaces for study, socialising, creativity and quiet time.

Its dedicated Youth Space - co-designed with local young people - features high-spec technology, creative studios and casual meeting areas. With no need for targeted advertising, the Youth Space has seen consistent usage since day one, highlighting the value of genuine engagement.

The library was also designed with sustainability, accessibility and adaptability in mind, with features like operable wall panels to maximise daylight, reconfigurable layouts and accessible fittings throughout.

The Parks and Leisure Australia Awards of Excellence celebrate innovative community infrastructure and programs across Australia, recognising projects that enrich lives through creating vibrant, healthy and inclusive spaces.

The City congratulates everyone involved in the planning, design and delivery of Piara Waters Library, and extends thanks to the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) for its funding support.
