Bin collection

Find your bin collection day

Go to our: Find your bin collection day page and insert your address into the Address field.

Your general rubbish bin is collected weekly, and your recycling bin is collected fortnightly. Bins are collected on the same day. Waste collection starts at 6am. Please ensure that your bin is presented for collection by 6am on your collection day. You may present your bin the night before collection if it is safe to do so.

Bin collection on public holidays

Bins are collected on all public holidays except for New Year’s Day, Good Friday and Christmas Day. When Christmas Day and New Year’s Day fall on a weekday, bins are emptied the following day. For example, if Christmas day falls on Tuesday, the Tuesday collection will be emptied on Wednesday, the Wednesday collection will be emptied on Thursday and so on. Good Friday collections will be emptied a day later on Saturday.

Placing your bins for collection

Putting bins out for collection picture

Your bins should be put out for collection by 6am on your collection day. It's ok to put them out the night before. Place your bin(s) on the kerb, with the wheels facing your house and the lid closed. On the day when both bins are collected, place them 50cm apart. It is important that there is nothing obstructing access to the bins. If so, they may not be collected. Bins presented in laneways should be at least 50cm from the fence or garage to avoid damage. Be careful not to compact waste in your bin as it may get wedged and not drop out when the bin is emptied by the waste collection vehicle. Bins must be put away by the end of your collection day.

Missed bin service

For missed general rubbish bins (dark green or red lid), contact the City on 9394 5124 within 24 hours of the scheduled collection day. For missed recycling bin (yellow lid), contact Veolia on 9394 5888. There are several reasons why your bin may not have been emptied:

  • The bin(s) was not put out in time - bins must be placed on the kerb by 6am

  • The bin may have contained unacceptable items or is too heavy for the truck to lift - check if your bin has a sticker on the lid

  • There may have been something obstructing access to your bin like a parked vehicle*

*If you have a laneway collection and there is still ongoing construction of buildings that could impact on bins being accessed, place bins on the verge at the front of the house, space permitting or contact Waste Services on 9394 5124 to determine a temporary solution.

Half emptied bin

If your bin has only been half emptied, there may be items stuck inside. Should your bin be half emptied, you're responsible to loosen the waste and present your bin for collection the following week.

Your bins and what goes in each one

You have two City of Armadale bins:

  • General rubbish bin (dark green or red lid)*

  • Recycling bin (yellow lid)

*The City is transitioning to red lids for rubbish bins, to align with the Australian Standard for bin lid colours. The body of your bin may be either Green or Black, both are acceptable for general waste. Any broken bins that can no longer be used are removed and recycled. If your bin is in good working order, it won’t be replaced. Unauthorised/Bunning's bin's will not be emptied.

General rubbish bin (dark green or red lid)

Your general rubbish bin is for small, non-hazardous household waste, food waste or garden waste only. The bin must not contain more than 70kg of waste, bin lids are to be closed at all times, waste must not protrude outside of the bin or be placed on the ground next to the bin as this will not be collected. The following waste items must not be placed in the bin:

  • Hot or burning ashes

  • Oils or poisons

  • Acid or hazardous waste

  • Aerosol cans

  • Batteries (car or household)

  • Sand, bricks, mortar, concrete

  • Large, heavy, sharp objects

  • Asbestos

  • Motor vehicle parts, tyres, oil filters

  • Pathological or cytotoxic waste

  • Medical waste

  • Gas cylinders

  • Fluorescent tubes or CFL’s (compact fluorescent lamps)

  • Electronic equipment (E-Waste or anything that has a cord)

These items should be taken to the Armadale Landfill and Recycling Facility or appropriate waste disposal facility for the waste type. Fees may apply.

Recycling bin (yellow lid)

The following can be placed in your recycling bin:

  • Aluminium cans

  • Steel cans

  • Cardboard - boxes, egg cartons and inner tubes from toilet roll and paper towel, milk/juice cartons (not silver lined UHT long-life cartons)

  • Paper - newspaper, paper bags, computer paper, envelopes, magazines, junk mail, paper wrapping paper (not shredded paper)

  • Plastic bottles and containers without lids (no polystyrene foam or meat trays)

  • Glass - bottles and jars (remove lids, metal lids go in recycling bin – place them in a steel can and pinch it together)

All items should be empty, clean and dry. Remove lids and place in the bin loose. To reduce the risk to employees and equipment and causing fires - NO hazardous waste such as batteries, aerosol cans, gas cylinders and containers with chemical residue should be place in either bin. These can be taken to Armadale Landfill and Recycling Facility. Visit the localised A-Z waste disposal guide for instructions on recycling and disposing of other household waste items.

Ordering bins

Order bins for a new home

To order bins for a new home call Waste Services on 9394 5124. Orders need to be placed by noon Friday for delivery the following week. Your delivery date will be Tuesday or Wednesday.

Please ensure your house number is displayed and can be seen from the street. If you don't have a letterbox, display a large number in your front window facing the street or on the garage door for a rear access property (ie. laneway). New bins may not be delivered over the Christmas and New Year holidays so make sure you get your order in early.

Order additional bin(s)

Property owners can order additional rubbish or recycling bins for an annual charge. To order an additional bin or to enquire about charges, call Waste Services on 9394 5124. You will receive an interim rates notice with the pro-rata charge. The additional bin will then be added to the rates notice from the next financial year. There is a minimum term of one year for additional bins.

Damaged bin(s)

Most bins are expected to last approximately 10 years.

Damage to your general rubbish bin (dark green or red lid)

Bin components, such as lids, pins and wheels can be replaced on your normal collection day for your general rubbish bin. Replacement bins are issued if your bin is split from normal wear and tear. To report damage to your bin contact Waste Services on 9394 5124. The bin will need to be left on the verge area for repair or replacements.

Damage to your recycling bin (yellow lid)

Bin components, such as lids, pins and wheels can be replaced on your normal collection day for your recycling bin. Replacement bins are issued if your bin is split from normal wear and tear. To report damage to your recycling bin contact Waste Services on 9394 5124. The bin will need to be left on the verge area for repair or replacements.

Bin tagging education program

We understand that it can be difficult to navigate through all of the information about what can and can't be put in your bins. The City has participated in the bin tagging program since 2019. The bin tagging education program aims to:

  • Improve household waste disposal and recycling habits

  • Reduce contamination in general waste and recycling bins

  • Reduce waste to landfill

The program involves a simple visual assessment of the contents of household’s general waste and recycling bin. Feedback is provided in the form of tags attached to the bin handle. Visit the localised A-Z waste disposal guide for recycling options, and a range of disposal instructions for other items of household waste. If you would like more information please call Waste Services on 9394 5124.
