Illegally dumped rubbish is expensive to remove, and negatively impacts the environment
The City encourages residents and visitors to help keep our natural environment clean and litter free. Littering is an offence under the Litter Act 1979 and the City's Resident Liaison Officers and Rangers patrol and issue fines to offenders. Littering can take on many forms, from leaving rubbish behind after a picnic or bits flying off an unsecured load carried on a trailer or ute. Investigations into littering found during regular patrols, or reported, can lead to an infringement or court prosecution.
Adopt-a-Spot empowers individuals, community groups, businesses and schools to contribute to a cleaner environment. Keep Australia Beautiful provide free resources and clean-up kits to help registered volunteers keep their chosen area clean. The City has partnered with Keep Australia Beautiful WA (KABWA) to support the Adopt-a-Spot litter program. To find out more and to register, visit Adopt-a-Spot
Keep Australia Beautiful Week is held in August each year, raising awareness on the simple things we can do in our daily lives to reduce our impact on the environment while encouraging communities to come together to reduce litter. Visit Keep Australia Beautiful Week for more information.
The Clean Schools program is a whole school approach to litter prevention. Teachers can visit Clean Schools to access support and resources. For additional resources see Waste Education.
If you have loaded your trailer or ute ready to take waste to one of the City's Drop-Off facilities, remember to secure your load and prevent litter. Unsecured loads can cause unsightly roadside litter and can be dangerous. Visit Unsecured Load Unsafe Road to find out more.
Ensure that your bin lids are closed when you present your bins for collection and that they are not overfull. This will assist with reducing incidental litter.
Clean Up Australia Day is an annual event held on the first Sunday of March or an alternative date of your choosing. The City supports registered participants by collecting bags of litter from nominated locations. To register a site visit Clean Up Australia Day. Are you going to collect litter? Every piece helps! Illegal dumping is deliberate littering in a variety of settings, including streets, parks, building site bins, vacant land, bushland, reserves, industrial and building sites and outside shops and median strips. Report illegal dumping by calling (08) 9394 5000 or by email. Please provide as much detail as possible including registration plates, make of vehicle and description of offender and items dumped. Reports are investigated and can result in an infringement or court prosecution.
The City's Removal of Rubbish, Refuse and Disused Materials Local Law was established to ensure that properties are maintained in a manner that is in keeping with the amenity of the area. Refer to the Information Sheet below for information on:
