The City of Armadale accounts for its carbon footprint across Waste, Building and Fleet operations. The 2020/21 to 2029/30 Corporate Greenhouse Action Plan includes targets in relation to carbon mitigation, and a number of actions to minimise the City’s operational carbon footprint.
Achievements to date in relation to carbon mitigation include:
Purchase of Renewable Energy for the City’s contestable sites under the WALGA Sustainable Energy Project (resulting in a zero carbon footprint for these buildings). Contestable sites are those consuming in excess of 50Mw per annum, and account for approximately one-third of the City’s Buildings.
The implementation and extension of the life of the Landfill Flaring Project from 7 to 12 years, providing additional capacity to generate Australian Carbon Credit Units. Since its inception in 2014, this project has abated over 110,000 tonnes of carbon via the combustion of methane.
Installation of solar energy infrastructure at a number of City facilities (Administration Centre, Armadale Arena, Champion Centre, Orchard House, Armadale Fitness and Aquatic Centre - AFAC, Armadale and Landfill Recycling Centre, Bedfordale Volunteer Bushfire Brigade, Seville Grove Library and Armadale Visitors Centre).
Armadale Fitness and Aquatic Centre: Implementation of a 500kW battery system, in partnership with Synergy, as part of Project Symphony, to operate in tandem with the 500kW solar system
Installation of a 1.34Mw Community Battery system at Harrisdale Playing Field, benefitting over 500 households (also as part of Project Symphony)
Commencement of the Fleet Transition Strategy, enabling the City’s vehicles to be changed over to Electric Vehicles (EV).
The City has installed four EV charging points at AFAC and eight at the main Administration Centre. These are available to the public.
